Baked sweet potato is very delicious. The sweet potato is in orange colour, which is sweeter than the yellow colour.

When I was a Girl Guide in secondary school, sweet potato is one of my favorite in every camping. We would baked the sweet potato in the camp fire and eat it by hand. Sometimes, eating with hand will make the food taste better.

Hmm, this photo is taken when I was travelling to China. There are people selling the sweet potato at the roadside and they bake the sweet potato as seen in the picture. Yummy yummy, the sweet potato is really delicious! I bought some to eat in the bus, and guess what? I felt full when the bus reached our dinner place…. So I couldn’t eat much in that dinner and get scolded by my parents for eating so many sweet potatoes.

I’ve been curious that is a person will fart after eating sweet potato? Hmm, I didn’t fart after eating so many sweet potatoes. Maybe my digest system is different? Ha, who knows?

Tanjung Rhu

Tanjung Rhu, located in the north of Langkawi with the exclusive view of the Andaman Sea.

There are a few resorts in Tanjung Rhu providing luxurious holiday packages. (When will it be?)

So, do anyone like this yellowish “egg yolk”?

Flowers

I love flowers that stand alone in the green and make them outstanding than others. The story told of mystical events that transpired during the Christmas season. The story was performed differently based on the choreographer, yet remaining the basic story plot.

The Nutcracker story is simple. Long ago a young girl named Clara receives a nutcracker doll from her mysterious uncle on Christmas Eve during a gala family party. This unusual gift magically transforms into a soldier prince. This handsome and mysterious stranger escorts Clara on an enchanting journey to the Kingdom of Sweets.

Dance Space was performing The Nutcracker at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (KLPac), choreographed by Steve Goh, who received 4 awards in the 6th BOH Cameronian Art Awards in 2008. The music of the show was composed by the renowned music composer, Ng Chor Guan, who was actively involves in a variety of mediums.

Basically, The Nutcracker by Dance Space was an idea to involve all the dancers from beginners (kids) to the advance (adults). It is certainly the most suitable story as the audiences were impressed with the kids’ crowded act, who dressed as swee puppet, dirty mice, and china doll. With their cutie act, it enhanced the mood of fairytale.

The flow of the fantasy was created with the scenes of Sugar Plum Fairy dance, Umbrella dance by China doll, mystifying Arabian dance, spirited steps of Spanish dance and the rhythmic Russian dance. The colourful costumes were enhanceing the fantasy-filled journey of Clara and the Prince.

It was a delightful performance as the audiences enjoyed the whole story flow. Chew Zi Xin (Clara) and Chen Fun Yen (Nutcracker/Prince) performed very well and confidently with their pas de duex. It was amazed when Chen did pirouettes en dehors with 8 rotations.

The Nutcracker by Dance Space was performed in classical ballet. The performance less focused in the technique footwork, yet it was a performance of joyfulness which the flow of dance was the attraction.

It has a few resorts which located in different place of the island, where we, the visitors, can enjoy our own private views on the scenery and have a peaceful vacation.

I love beach, just to listen to the waves and I enjoy the scenery on the combination of sea and blue sky. I never regret for going this 3 days 2 nights trip with my friends as the arresting beauty lingers in my mind until today. Basically, the trip was just to escape from the downtown and to relax my mind. When I looked into the sea and listened to the waves in the morning, I felt like dancing with the wind at the beach.... and I really walked down to the beach and danced on the sea-water, enjoying the cool water. Too bad I didn't get to watch the sunrise as the resort I stayed was facing to south-east. We planned to walk across the jungle and watch the sunrise on the third day yet none of us can wake, what a waste!

We went snorkelling along the beach and we were so amazed on the coral. We enjoyed the most as we were so close with the baby shark and turtle. There was a lot of different species of fish in the coral garden. Nemo is the only one I known, hehe, this has to thanks to the cartoon "Finding Nemo". We also went fishing on the second day. It was a bad experience as I felt to vomit standing on the boat to fish while the waves made the boat floating high and low. However, I was so happy when I fished a big fish for our dinner.

Beside the monkeys climbing around the trees, moreover there are squirrels running around in the resort. We threw some breads for the squirrel so we could snap a photo on it, yet it ran very fast up to the tree after grabbing the bread. It was too high to focus on it, so sad that we can't get a clear photo of the squirrel. It was so cute and we wanted to keep a photo on it as it is not easy to see a squirrel in the city.

Well, it was a nice trip and I will go there for vacation again whenever I got the chance. I would say that Lang Tengah Island is a place for one who likes to dive, snorkelling, sunbathe and explore the nature.

Earth Building (Tu Lou)

Pictures were taken in Fujian Tulou when I travelled there at year 2006. I was impressed on the buildings and the Hakka food I had there. Tulou is stayed by the Hakka family. If someone is going to travel to Fujian, this is the place that you should go and have a visit. Trust me, you will love it.

Fujian Tulou is a property of 46 houses built between the 12th and 20th centuries over 120 km in south-west of Fujian province. Set amongst rice, tea and tobacco fields the tulou are earthen houses. Several storeys high, they are built along an inward-looking, circular or square floor plan as housing for up to 800 people each. They were built for defence purposes around a central open courtyard with few windows to the outside and only one entrance. Housing a whole clan, the houses functioned as village units and were known as “a little kingdom for the family” or “bustling small city.” They feature tall fortified mud walls capped by tiled roofs with wide over-hanging eaves. The most elaborate structures date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The buildings were divided vertically between families with each disposing of two or three rooms on each floor. In contrast with their plain exterior, the inside of the tulou were built for comfort and were often highly decorated. They are inscribed as exceptional examples of a building tradition and function exemplifying a particular type of communal living and defensive organization, and, in terms of their harmonious relationship with their environment, an outstanding example of human settlement.

Fujian Tulou is listed as World Heritage at year 2008.

Mount Wuyi

Pictures were taken in Mount Wuyi, Fujian, China, which is one of the World Heritage.

A picture could say thousand of words. I am not sure do my pictures disseminating any message, yet different people would have different perceptions. I am still improving my skills on photography, I hope these would not too bad. Anyway, I just wanna share with you all the pictures I took.

I was impressed by the serene beauty of the dramatic gorges of the Nine Bend River which you can view from my pictures. It was gorgeous at the exact location to view the nature beauty of the trees, mountains and rivers. Mount Wuyi is one of the most outstanding subtropical forests in the world. The riverine landscape of Nine-Bend Stream (lower gorge) is also of exceptional scenic quality in its juxtaposition of smooth rock cliffs with clear, deep water. Mount Wuyi is listed as World Heritage at year 1999.

It was a relaxing tour as I really enjoyed the scenery. I think, at certain period or time, travelling would be a way to freshen the mindset and you might get new ideas. Travelling and enjoying the scenery and nature beauty helped me in self-improve. So, try and get yourself a time and runaway from the busy life…… I believe, stop and have a look and listen anything around you would actually let you learn more. Enjoy life!!!!!!

Dance Waves 2008 – Passion in Dance

Dance is a pervasive theme that expressing movement, passion, sensuality and tension. In traditional ballet, the style is very classical while in contemporary ballet, it has more of jazzy feel.

Dance Waves 2008 which organised Ellie Zhou Ballet Studio at 23 August 2008 was a combination of classical ballet, contemporary ballet and some cultural dances from China, Korea and even Spanish. There is 16 themes of dance in the show which presented by the students in Ellie Zhou Ballet Studio, some old folks, guest dancers from ASWARA, and Zhou Gui Xin (Artistic Director of the show).

The opening welcome dance was presented by Isabelle Brouwers, a 12 years old girl who only started her ballet dancing at 7 years old, talented and with the passion in dance. Isabelle is going to the Royal Ballet School in England at September for her further dancing academy, which is the dream of the ballerina. She presented 3 solos in classical ballet with a lovely style. Her dances were impressed as she danced very well with the Pointe shoe while others with her age are still dancing with the flat sole shoe. She managed it quite well in several chaînés tournes, double pirouettes, arabesque, double pique turns and grand jeté with good technique and flexibility. Her attitudes were lovely with the turnings. It was impressed as she danced with the advance ballet style. Although some of her movement was not very smooth, yet you can see that she was trying to do well in every single movement. I would say that she was too focused on her footwork more than the flow of the dances. Well, she is just 12 years old and she would improve her skills and the sense of ballet at the Royal Ballet School in England. The effort and passion in ballet was seen in her dancing and she would be a charming ballerina then.

Isabelle

“Pastoral” was a combination of neoclassical ballet with the Mongolian’s dance. The dance was in extreme tempos with technical footwork, presented solo by Elynn Chew. She performed a lot of turnings in the dance. She did continuous 6 chaînés very well as she spotted to her destination. Although the dance was choreographed by Zhou Gui Xin, however Elynn did the composition and performance very well. In ballet, a person body is an instrument of expression that includes the technique and composition. Her turnings were amazing as she let go the centre point and that enhancing the grace and beauty of the turnings.

Watching “Sense of you” by Alyzsa Lim was very touching as she danced just like her own experience. Her dance was a meeting place between classical ballet technique and contemporary dance sensibilities. Ballet is not only the technique that you need to perform, but to dance from the heart. Alyzsa was successful to carry out the mood of “Sense of you” as her dance presented the soul, the sense of heart break and a girl who was crazy for love. Her dance created the visual imagination as her facial expression, hand movement and the body flow tells the story. “Sense of you” was a combination of fast and slow ballet type of pace. Alyzsa expressed her emotions with the flow of the music and the dance took a lot out of her. Her facial expression added point for her performance which made the dance much more appealing to watch. The audience felt the sense of love by the way of her dancing and it touched the audience’s heart. On the stage, she was a girl who was in love to someone that doesn’t understand or knows on her feeling. Her heartbreak was shown and reached the audience heart. Alyzsa’s performance was amazed as she get into the mood and made her dance a soul or spirit. “Sense of you” was choreographed by Alyzsa and it was a good work of hers.

Dance Waves 2008 was not only presented by the young but they had some old folks to present also. I would say that it is a good effort to promote dancing among the senior citizens. Within 16 themes of dance, 5 themes (cultural dance) were presented by the old folks: “Mazurka”, “Flower Drum”, “Half Moon”, “Carmen” and “Polka”. Their performances were not to show the skills but the efforts. It is difficult for the old folks especially some is up to 70 years old to memorise all the steps and moreover they still need to form composition, follow the beat and develop the posture. According to Ellie Lai, Principal of Ellie Zhou Ballet Studio, the old folks found it difficult to memorise the steps and to demonstrate the steps and style when they first joined, yet after several classes, they found that their stamina were improved and memorising the steps let their mind stay awake. Fans were used in “Flower Drum” and “Half Moon”. The old folks controlled the fans very well with the posture and according to the beat of music. Fan techniques need a lot of wrist exercise, hence it was credible that the old folks managed it quite well. Cultural dances were always in the combination of fast and slow pace, so do the 5 dances presented by the old folks and they danced very well with the accurate of beat. The old folks were enjoying the dances and they did cheers the audience. Since a 70 years old auntie can dance well, so why not us?

Carmen

There were 6 guest dancers from ASWARA and they were performing “Tibetan Folk Dance” and “Time” (Contemporary ballet). “Tibetan Folk Dance” was a dance with a lot of turning in fast movement. With the combination of turning and hand movement, the extra long sleeve costumes were flying and turn in the mid-air. The concept of the dance was to create cheerful and happiness feel. With the steps that form a shape of 8 and the combination of hand movement, the dance flow was so smooth and it sent the message of happiness. Of course, facial expression was one that made the dance looked cheerful. The dancers need a lot of endurance to demonstrate this dance as the whole body made the movement with running, jumping and turning. The dancers were really the performers as no matter how tired they are, the facial expression was always in smiling. “Time”, the contemporary ballet which illustrated the love while time is eternity, was another impressing dance from ASWARA dancers. As a dance that tell story, there were some stunts in the performance. The male dancer, Mohd Zaim has a lot of upper body strength and strong hand to do lifts and lift another person. The female dancer was thin and had leg muscle which gave her the ability to rise on the tips of her toes. Once they began performing on stage, the audience had a different view of ballet and their movement became important. With the stunts of lifting and turning, the female dancer's technique expanded, enabling her to create the illusion of incredible lightness and to project an increased sense of daring. The audience were impressed while the male dancer holds the female dancer’s hand and did the turnings which let her fly in the mid-air. The audience felt the deep love as the dancers demonstrated their everlasting love to each other. Time is not a concern for them as they believe even when they die, their spirits would still in love. The dance “Time” told a touching love story with its graceful, flowing, and precise movements.

Tibetan Folk Dance

“Yellow River” was a dance on the hope and dream to the mother land. It included a lot of turning and fast movement. The dance was to show the nature swirling and rapid of the great river. It was a challenging dance as the dancers need to have the endurance and ability to dance in fast movement. The dancers were dancing in different movement and different posture. With the fast movement, actually it made the dance quite messy and the audience would not know which dancer to focus on. However, it was appealing when they ran into a pattern and did different jumping and turning technique one follow by another one. Their footwork and ballet technique were very well demonstrated. “Korean Dance” was a dance with a lot of hand movement while the footwork was lesser. Yet, “Korean Dance” was amazed the audience most when Hii Ing Fung did her turning on her knees.

Korean Dance

Zhou Gui Xin presented his signature dance which named “Eagle”. His hand movements were amazed as just look alike with the wings movement of eagle. The dance was to demonstrate the lifestyle of eagle. The whole body movement shown the flying style of eagle while his eyes contact and facial expression demonstrate on how the eagle spotting to its target when it hunts.

Eagle

“Swan Lake” is always one of the famous performances in ballet dancing. Dance Waves 2008 was also included it as the ending performance. Zhou Gui Xin had modify the dance with the original one. This “Swan Lake” was to show the ballet technique more than the story telling. The dancers did tours chaînés déboulés, grand jeté, grand battlement, batterie, attitude en pointe and more in different combinations and extensions. Elynn Chew as the Odette, had a lovely hand movements while doing her bourre and her arabesque penchée with turning was just nice in the angle. While Foo Siau Yin as the Black Swan, danced very well with her arabesque en pointe after several hops on one foot en demi-pointe. The audiences were adored when Zhou Gui Xin did pirouettes en dehors with 16 rotations. Danced as Prince Siegfried, he supported and lifted Elynn Chew and Foo Siau Yin with various postures in the Odette pas de deux and Black Swan pas de deux. I thought I would be able to watch Danse des petits cygnes which is the dance of little swans, yet it was not in any act of “Swan Lake” by Zhou Gui Xin. Yet, Zhou Gui Xin did arranged the solos for each dancer in “Swan Lake”. That was the time for them to demonstrate the advance and challenging ballet techniques they had learnt. The dancers were all danced confidently and fully extend their turn-outs, turnings, pointing, and jumping. The audience felt the fun of dancing from them and it made the others like me want to try to dance on the stage. Finally, the coda générale was presented by Elynn Chew with arabesque à la hauteur on the supported lift-up by Zhou Gui Xin. When all of the dancers did the reverence, the audiences cheered with delight.

It was a success performance on that Saturday night. The performance was not only a performance yet it sent some messages to the audiences. A person who knows how to dance is doesn’t mean that he/she knows how to present the mood of the dance. Passion is very important for dancing as we could see that in Isabelle Brouwers. But passion is not enough for a dancer, yet they need to understand the dance to bring out the mood. Alyzsa Lim demonstrated her dance very well in her various body movement and facial emotions. It is a good work as the audiences were getting into the mood of heartbreaker by watching her “Sense of you”. It is a great achievement as the audiences were impressed on the old folks dancing. The performance proved that the senior citizen also can dance. Ellie Zhou Ballet Studio was success to promote ballet dancing not only to the young but also to the senior citizen.

Swan Lake

My review on "Click"

Click (2006) is a film directed by Frank Coraci and written by Steve Koren and Mark O’Keefe. The film tells a story about an architect going through his life by the help of a universal remote control. Throughout the film, it intended to deliver a message to the audience which the overall moral is that family should come first.

Film is a visual medium which the visual gained a high level of credibility as means of communication. According to Schirato and Yell(2000), visual texts seem to be able to reproduce reality in an apparently objective way. Visual text does not interfere since there are no obvious difference between the image, the text created and the reality it signify. Click (2006) is a visual text which emphasized on the life of the architect, Michael, to represent the director objectivity – “family come first”. Genres are text types or forms of communication associated with a social purpose and occasion. The film uses the genre of comedy and drama to represent its message. Comedies are light-hearted dramas, crafted to amuse, entertain and provoke enjoyment. The comedy genre humorously exaggerates the situation, the language, action and characters. At the beginning of the film, it shows that Michael does not know which remote control to switch on the television. From that scene, it creates a comedy mode yet it actually sending a message that Michael does not spend time with the family. Besides comedy, genre of fantasy is used in the film as it uses a universal remote to represent the whole life of the Michael. The film indulges in plenty of puerile remote-related bits – use of slow-motion feature for zooming at a jogger’s breasts, color adjustment function to change the skin colour, pause button to freeze Michael’s boss and assault him.

Every representation is a sign that has been ideologised. Schirato and Yell (2000) suggests the choice and arrangement of objects and the use of space in a visual text are potentially meaningful, and when those meanings are brought together or integrated, narrative formed. With the editing of the film, Frank Coraci is able to structure the visuals and form a meaning. Through the processes of selection and omission of visuals, it creates a meaning to the audience in the comedy and drama genre. Behind every comedy genre scenes it has a message. In the beginning of the film, Michael is late to his son swimming competition besides he goes to the wrong lane and gives excuses for his mistake. Later, he keeps talking with his boss while having dinner with his family. Next, his daughter ask how much time is he going to live, after he answer “one minute”, his daughter hug him and scare that he is dying. From that, Frank Coraci send a message that Michael has not spend much time with his family yet he shows the family love in the genre of comedy. At about the end of the film, it shows that Michael rewinds and repeats for listening his father says he loves him. With the help of remote control, Michael is able to return to what he has missed. By using the genre of comedy and then change to drama, Frank Coraci is successes in sending the only message of the film, the importance of family love.

According to the book Communication and Cultural Literacy, it is stated that V.N. Volosinov’s proposition always insisted that meanings are relational and are produced as a result of ideological struggles and through the relations between signs (Shirato & Yell, 2000). Sign and symbol are important concepts to understand in discussing visual text. A sign is anything that stands for something else. Scenes as ordinarily used are signs in this sense. The object referred to by a sign does not need to be present for the meaning of the sign to be understood. Context helps define the specific meaning of a sign. Frank Coraci includes the arguments between Michael and his wife, the struggle in his job, the divorce with his wife, and the death of his father in the film. Frank Coraci structures the film by showing Michael skips his life and returning for what he missed, thereby the message (family come first) is formed. From the relations between the signs throughout the film, Frank Coraci sends the message of the important of family start from the beginning till the end of the film. One scene may have more than one meaning. However, the most significant scene do convey a definite meanings At the end of the film, the message that Frank Coraci wants to send is obvious where the Michael says to his son “family come first” before he dies.

Moore (Interpreting Audiences, 1993) suggests that the understanding of meaning in a text does not solely depend on the text itself, but instead relies on the author’s ability to disseminate the message and the audience’s ability in decoding the message. This statement reinforces the fact that one is able to have more than one understanding of a statement. However in this film, Frank Coraci is able to send the message in his own way and the audience receives it in the way he wants. The ideology of the film is through the real life where people are inattention to their family at the present time. The narrative structure and the visuals are well in order and attract the audience’s interest. The film is intended to influence the audience’s emotion where it switches the genre of comedy to drama. People are laughing throughout the first half of the movie, yet it changes to drama when the remote is uncontrollable and the architect starts to rely that he misses all the precious experience. Although different people has different perceptions on the same subject, yet due to the connection they share and the meaning they generate when put together, the audience will not have any other options then to receive the message of family come first throughout the film.

Carey (1989) states that the idea of transmission communication is a process whereby message are transmitted and distributed in space for the control of distance and people. The ritual view of the communication is linked to terms such as sharing and participation. Click (2006) is not only imparting information but the representation of shared beliefs. It invites our participation on the film and social roles within it. Click (2006) represents the activities that the audiences faced everyday and the struggle within a family. Communication is a symbolic process as film is a visual medium whereby reality is produced and transformed. This film is a story about reality as it represents our real lifestyle, culture and society. For example, the traffic jam scene and Michael’s demanding on promotion in his job reflect to our working lifestyle. Besides, the narrative structure includes the problems that might be faced by some of the families such as argument between the husband and wife, struggle for a better living and bad relationship between the parent and children.

“It is understandable then, that in the capitalist nation which has been most insistently committed to constant transformation and the endless turnover of consuming pleasures, with a shaky sense of history and perhaps a fragile sense of reality, the reassurance of something felt as real is so eagerly sought.”
- Modernity and Postmodern Culture

In our world that is constantly changing, people are now demanding on pleasure and quality of lifestyle. While achieving the success on their career, they have lack of care on their family then. Parents never spend time with their children, husband and wife do not talk to each other, and divorce cases are increasing. Click (2006) is a film which represents these cultural changes. Arguments and struggle for better living are become part of the culture. Humans develop culture to provide a structured framework of riles and norms for their behaviour, people do not just shape culture, they also create sub-culture or culture within a culture which comprises of smaller groups within a society.

According to Danaher, Schirato and Webb, Foucault uses the term ‘game of truth’ to emphasize that, while public institutions authorize their activities by claiming to be speaking the truth, these truth claims are dependent on institutional and discursive practices (2000). Based on this, Click is seem to have ‘spoke of the truth’, because the standpoint of the film is in the same line of the ‘institutional and discursive practices’ of the majority of the world, which is people nowadays always work overtime to achieve a quality life and lack of care to the family. To the people around the world, quality life is always a dream. The standard of living is gradually become higher and people work hard in their career to get promotion and success. People nowadays always compare each other in their wealthy where this situation shows in the film which the architect always compare his standard of living with his neighbour. He aims to become a partner with his boss in the company yet he faces problem within his family.

According to French social theorist, Michel Foucault, a ‘discursive formation’ is created by several statements working together (Danaher, Schirato and Webb, 2000). When the statements function as a whole, it is noticed that any single visual has a relation to the other. Start from the beginning of the film, Frank Coraci shows that the architect, Michael sacrifices his family time for his job and the argument with his wife increasing day by day. Later he uses the remote control to skip his life and also skip some part of the life that he does not want to skip. After all the event happens, he regrets and blames on the remote which destroy his life. Due to the connection they share and the meaning they generate when put together, the audiences have no other options then to think all of these happen because of his behaviour. Discourses produce significant comprehension about a particular subject matter. This film represents the message of the importance of family love. Nothing is important than having a happy family. At about the end of the film, the eccentric inventor tells Michael “It’s just a corn”, which means after being through all the experience, it is just a simple life. It sends a message that we should appreciate for what he have now before it is too late.

In the conclusion, the film sends the ‘family comes first’ message to the audience as a way to remind the audience to appreciate what they have in the present days. In the end of the film, the architect throws the remote in the garbage without any doubt, signifying a major change in his outlook on life. It is also a way of representation to remind the audience to have different perception in their life after watching this film.

Reference

Carey, J.
